The most prominent mammals in Nyungwe are primates. 13 primate species which occur in Nyungwe represent something like 20-25% of the total number in Africa, a phenomenal figure which in East Africa is only comparable to Uganda’s Kibale Forest.
Notwithstanding the chimpanzees, the most celebrated of Nyungwe’s primates is the Rwenzori colobus, a race of the more widespread Angola colobus which is restricted to the Albertine Rift. Although all colobus monkeys are sociable, the ones in Nyungwe are unique insofar as they typically move in troops of several hundred animals.
