Birding Trip Africa : 8 Days Birding in Uganda

Day 1:
You will arrive at the airport to meet our company representative who will transfer you to your Hotel to check in. Depending on the time of arrival you may for a welcome birding at the botanical gardens. These gardens were established in 1901 and lie on the shores of Africa’s’ greatest Lake, Victoria. Expect birds like Slender-billed Weaver Yellow-backed Weaver, Brown-throated Weaver, Grey-headed Gull, Long-tailed Cormorant, Golden-backed Weaver, Common Squacco Heron, Yellow-billed Duck, Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Broad-billed Roller, Black-headed Gonolek, Swamp Flycatcher, Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, Splendid Starling, Orange Weaver, Verreaux's Eagle-owl, Red-chested Sunbird, Ross's Turaco, Pied Hornbill, Crowned Hornbill, Open-billed Stork, , Grey-caped Warbler and many more. Dinner and overnight at Imperial Resort Hotel, Botanical Beach Hotel.

Day 2:
Have breakfast to go birding along the Lincoln Trail. It was established by the local bird guides in 2002 where over 170 species have been recorded. It has been recommended by birders as the best birding site nearest to Kampala and Entebbe. Here expect birds like Red-headed Lovebird, Brown Twin-spot, White-headed Barbet, Black-headed Bush-shrike, Yellow bill, Double-toothed Barbet, Richard's Pipit, Tambourine Dove, Little Ringed Plover, Verreaux's Eagle-owl, Klaas's Cuckoo, and many more. Dinner and overnight at Imperial Resort Hotel, Botanical Beach Hotel or Sheraton Hotel/ Serena Hotel Kampala.

Day 3:
Have breakfast to drive to Mabamba Swamp 50km west of Kampala. If you spent the night in Kampala you will have a stop at the papyrus swamp to spot birds like Papyrus Gonolek, Blue-headed Coucal, White-winged Warbler, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, Lesser Jacana, African pygmy goose, Yellow billed Egret, Goliath Herons and many more. After this break you will proceed to Mabamba swamp, where you will go for dugout canoe ride on the swamp to checkout birds like the rare shoe bill, African Water Rail, White-faced Whistling-duck, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Cape Wagtail, Swamp Flycatcher, Winding Cisticola, African fish eagle and many more. Dinner and over night at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel/ Botanical Beach Hotel/ Sheraton Hotel.

Day 4:
Have breakfast to drive to Queen Elizabeth National park. You will have a lunch break in Mbarara. You will reach in the afternoon to go for a boat cruise on the Kazinga channel to search for waterbirds. The park is blessed with variety of bird species with over 600 species recorded. On the Kazinga channel you should lookout for birds like long tailed cormorants, Great white and pink-backed pelicans, African jacanas, African fish eagle, Malachite kingfishers, White winged terns, Sand pipers-Black-tailed Godwit, Common Snipe, Little Stint, and many more. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge.

 

Day 5
Have breakfast to go birding on the Kasenyi track in the park to search for birds like the African Harrier-Hawk, Martial eagles, Grey Kestrel, African wattled plovers, Harlequin Quail and many more. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the Kyambura Gorge for more birding. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari lodge.

Day 6:
Bird around the Mweya peninsula in the morning after breakfast to search for birds like Pin-tailed Whydah, Red-chested Sunbird, Black headed Gonolek, Grey capped warbler and many more. You will then drive to Lake Mburo NP at 10:00am, with stop-overs to see birds like Crowned Plover, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Southern Red Bishop, Wattled Lapwing, Variable Sunbird, African Harrier, several lark species and many others. You will reach in the evening to bird around the entrance of the park or Rwonyo Camp. Dinner and overnight at Mantana luxury tented camp / Rwonyo Camp

Day 7:
Go for birding in the park early in the morning to lookout for birds Red necked Spurfowls, Black bellied bustard, African wattled plovers, Helmeted Guinea fowl, White tailed and pennant winged nightjars, Rufous-naped Lark, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and many more. In the afternoon you will go for a dugout canoe ride on Lake Mburo in search for waterbirds like African Darter, African water rail, Spur-winged plovers, Malachite Kingfishers, and many more. Dinner and overnight at Mantana Tented camp, Rwonyo Camp

Day 8:
Drive back to Kampala to reach in the early afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Hotel / Serena Hotel / Hotel Africana
