Birdwatching Safari Africa 14 Days: Birding in Uganda
Day 1
Arrive at Entebbe International airport to meet our company representatives who will transfer you to the proposed Hotel to check in. Depending on the time of arrival you may go for birding in the botanical gardens. Look out for birds like Northern brown throated weaver, Hamerkop, African Open billed stork, Yellow billed Ducks, terns, Grey headed gull and many more. Dinner and overnight at Botanical beach hotel, Imperial Resort beach.
Day 2
After breakfast depart for Lake Mburo National Park. The park has over 300 bird species recorded and its best know for its acacia associated species. You will reach in the afternoon and then later in the afternoon you will bird along the entrance to the park and Rwonyo camp. Look out for birds like Crested Francolin, Emerald-spotted wood dove, Bare-faced go-away bird, Lilac-breasted Roller, Green wood-hoopoe, spot-flanked Barbet, Yellow throated Apalis, Marico sunbird and many more. Day 3
Have breakfast very early in the morning to go for more birding in the park along the Kigambira loop, which traverses a variety of productive habitats. Expect birds like African Marsh Harriers, Banded Snake Eagles, Shikra Goshawks, Augur Buzzard, African fish, Twany, Steppe, and African Hawk Eagles and many more. Retire for the boat ride on Lake Mburo to check out some of the water bird species such as Papyrus Gonolek, Malachite Kingfishers etc and then transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable forest. Day 4
Take a cup of coffee early in the morning to go birding in the Ruhija area. Bird life and primate life in Bwindi is quite excellent with implausible variety of flora. The park is known to harbours over 330 species. Amongst the numerous possibilities are no fewer than 23 of Uganda’s 24 Albertine endemics, including the globally threatened species such as African Green Broad bill and Shelley’s crimsonwing. You will bird the whole day in Ruhija Area to view birds like Mountain Illadopsis, Red-throated Alethe, Archer’s Robin-Chat, White-starred Robin, Northern Olive Thrush, Dusky Crimsonwing, Blue headed Sunbirds and many more. Day 5 and 6
Have breakfast to discover the forest trails; first you will go along the River Ivy trail that is by far the longest in the park or you may go along the Munyaga river trail is ideal for a short walk. Expect birds like Grey chested, Illadopsis, short tailed warbler and White bellied robin-chat. The popular waterfall trail provides an attractive feature of the forest and winds through beautiful forests to a series of cascades along the Muyanga River. This trail which leads to three delightful crystal clear waterfalls typifies your impression of a tropical rainforest. The next day you may go birding along the Long trail to Mubwindi. Expect birds like Dwarf honey-guide, Slender billed starling, Ayre’s Hawk-Eagle, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, crimsonwings and many more. Day 7
Have a cup of coffee to go a short walk along the Impressive diversity of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and then return to the Lodge for and then transfer to Queen Elizabeth National park. You drive directly to the lodge to reach in the late afternoon and bird around the Mweya peninsula. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge/ /budget Institute of Ecology
Day 8
Go for an early morning game drive and bird search along the Kasenyi track where you will catch up with early risers and nocturnal birds. Look out for birds like Nightjars, African Harrier Hawk, Martial Eagle and many more. In the afternoon you will go for a boat ride on the Kazinga channel where you see plenty of waterbirds. Expect birds like great white and pink-backed pelicans, malachite and pied kingfishers, and the open-billed stork. Dinner and overnight at luxurious Mweya Lodge/budget Institute of Ecology (FB)
Day 9
Have breakfast and with packed lunch transfer Kibale National Park, a large protected block of rainforest offering variety of bird species. You will reach in the late afternoon to go for an evening forest walk to look out for birds’ like Nahan’s francolin, Narina’s trogon, blue-headed bee-eater, yellow-billed barbets, Cassin’s spinetail, joyful greenbul and many more. Day 10
Go for a half day forest walk, around the Kanyanchu area. This walk will reward you with birds like the African Goshawk, the majestic crowned eagle, Black-necked weaver, Montane Masked Apalis, Noisy Grey parrots, Green -breasted and African Pittas, Abyssinian Ground Thrush. In the afternoon you will then go birding along the Bigodi wetland sanctuary papyrus Gonolek, White winged Warbler, papyrus Canary, Scaly-throated Honey guide, Bocage’s Bush shrike mosque swallow and many more. Dinner and overnight at luxurious Ndali Lodge/budget Rwenzori View guest house.
Day 11
Have breakfast and with packed lunch drive off to Murchison Falls National Park to reach in the afternoon and then you will cross the Nile with a ferry to reach Paraa Safari Lodge- that over looks the Victoria Nile with a swimming pool. Day 12
Early in the morning you will go across the Nile early and spend the whole day on the game viewing tracks north of the Nile to search for bird. Expect birds like Buff-bellied Warbler, the Blue-naped bird headed Gonolek, Silver bird, Black-headed Batis, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver, White-crested Touraco, Yellow-throated Leaflove and the highly localized White-rumped Seedeater. Day 13
Early in the morning go for a boat ride on the Nile-an experience not to be missed as the banks of the Victoria Nile literally teem with birds and other wildlife. The banks contain wildlife like hippos, buffaloes, and crocodiles and plenty of water birds. On this trip expects birds like African Darter, Goliath Heron, African spoonbill, Purple Swamp hen, Senegal Thick-knee Skimmer, Fulvous ducks, Saddled-billed stork and many more. Day 14
Have breakfast to transfer to the top of the falls where the park derives its name before you embark on the journey back to Kampala. Have a lunch stop in Mbarara and then proceed to reach in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Hotel / Serena Hotel.
