Accommodation in Uganda
Introduction.
Wherever you travel in Uganda, and whatever your budget, you will often have problems finding the suitable accommodation.
Most towns have a good variety of moderately priced and budget hotels, and even the smallest villages will usually have somewhere you can stay for dollar or so. Up markets accommodation, is generally available in major towns another tourist centres such as National Parks.
Accommodations in Uganda are places among five categories that is; up market moderate, budget, shoestring and camping however the first three are the most common ones.
Up Market
This category embraces all hotels, lodges and resorts that cater primarily to the international leisure travellers and would probably be accorded a two-to four-star ranking internationally. Most hotels in this category offer smart, modern accommodation with en-suite facilities, mosquito netting, air conditioning or fans depending on the local climate) and in cities DSTV in all rooms. A smaller subset within this category consists of smaller game lodges and tented camps that typically consist of no more than ten double accommodation units, built and decorated in a style that complements the surrounding environment, catering to the exclusive end of the market. Room rates of city up market accommodations include breakfast but exclude other meals.
Moderate
In Uganda, as in many African countries, there is often a huge gap between the price and quality of the very cheapest hotels that meet international standards, and that of the most expensive hotels that are geared primarily towards locals and budget travellers. For this reason, the moderate bracket is rather more nebulous than other accommodation categories. Essentially, it embraces those hotels which, for one or the other reason, could not truly be classified as up market but also too expensive or of a sufficiently high standard that they cannot be considered budget lodgings. Many places listed in this range are superior local hotels that suffice in lieu of any genuinely u markets accommodation in a town that sees relatively few tourists. This category also embraces decent lodges or hotels in recognized tourist areas that charge considerably lower rates than their up market competitors, but are clearly a notch or two above the budget category. Hotels in this range normally offer comfortable accommodation in self contained rooms with hot water, fan and possibly DSTV, and they will have a decent restaurant and employ a high ration of English speaking staff. This is the category to go for if you are traveling on a limited but not a low budget and expect reasonably high but not luxurious standard of accommodation.
Budget
The hotels in this category are generally aimed largely at the local market and they definitely don’t approach international standards, but they will usually be reasonably clean and comfortable, and a definite cut above the basic guest houses that proliferate in most towns. Hotels in this bracket will more often than not have a decent restaurant attached, English speaking staff, and comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities, running cold or possibly hot water, fans and good mosquito netting, which may or may not be very substantial. This is the category to look for if you are on a limited budget, but want to avoid total nastiness.
